Dear Friends and Families of Colonel Walker School

Thank you to all who came out for our Meet the Teacher event this week. It was fabulous to see our students so enthusiastically lead family members and caregivers through their classrooms with such a sense of pride. Feedback from teachers and parents about the open house format was very positive.

Today at school our students honored Orange Shirt Day (September 30, a non-instructional day). All students were introduced to our new CWS Ambearrister. This bear is one of many hosted in classrooms across Canada (the third in Alberta) and a friend to the Ambearrister who lives and learns alongside our neighbours at PFS. More information about Spirit bear can be found here. Our CWS Ambearrister (who is yet to be named) will spend a month (Blackfoot moon cycle) in each classroom this year. Look for updates on our Ambearrister’s journey on the medicine wheel in our main hallway. Participating in this initiative is  just one of the ways we are working towards our CWS commitment to Truth and Reconciliation through ReconciliACTION.

Staffing Update

It is with mixed emotions that I write to inform you that Rachel Clowes will be moving into an Acting Assistant Principal role at Capitol Hill School starting October 14. We are so grateful for Rachel’s leadership over the past two years at CWS. We will begin our search for a new teacher immediately, and will communicate information about this staffing decision as soon as it is made. It is my hope that our students in grade 2/3 will be able to meet their new teacher before saying “bye for now” to Mrs. Clowes.

Upcoming Dates

September 30: National Day for Truth and Reconciliation (No classes, see here for events happening in Moh’kins’tis today)

October 6-10:  Flag Football Residency (all grades)

October 10:  Deadline for return of signed IPPs

October 27-31: Grade 4/5 Drinkwater attends Seed School

Have a fantastic weekend,

Kate Jones
