Dear Friends and Families of Colonel Walker School,

We’ve had a number of classes off site over the past couple of weeks- to the Calgary Zoo, Fort Calgary, Butterfield Acres and Youth Link. Students reported very positive experiences following these field trips, and the learning they engaged in is a fantastic compliment to all the learning happening each day at school at this busy time of year. We continue to be grateful to our dedicated Colonel Walker School Council and Association for generously supporting these enriched learning experiences for all of our students.

Please see below for some important updates:

Trickster Theatre Residency

We are excited to welcome artists from Trickster Theatre to our school next week to co-create the show “Ko’komiki’somm - Grandmother Moon.” All classrooms from both CWS and PFS have been exploring teachings around the moon phase they have been assigned for the performance. It’s been wonderful to see the teachers and students of classes who will be collaborating with Trickster next week come together for learning- in classrooms, over tea, and on the land. If you’re available to volunteer, have clearance, and have not yet had an opportunity to do so, please click on the following link and sign up for one of the volunteer slots still remaining: Trickster Theatre Volunteer Sign Up. Thank you to all those who have signed up already! We can't wait to show you all our learning at the final performance next Friday, May 10, at 10:55am.

Breakfast Pilot

Over the month of May we will pilot offering a small number of “grab and go” breakfast items at school.  Each day, a few servings of grain, protein and fruit will be available to those students who require it. Our goal is to explore budget, logistics, staffing requirements, student uptake and menu preferences to inform future planning decisions. The information we gather will help us to explore the feasibility pf implementing a universal breakfast program in the future. At this time, please continue to feed your child a healthy breakfast at home so that they are ready for learning at school each day; we are not yet in a position to offer a universal breakfast program at our school. Emergency pantry supplies and donations from Brown Bagging for Kids will continue to be available when students are hungry during the day at school.
