Dear Friends and Families of Colonel Walker School,

It’s hard to believe we have only two weeks left in the 2023-2024 school year. The next couple of weeks are busy ones, so please see below for some updates:

Division One Choir and Grade 6 Musical Performances Tomorrow

Tomorrow at 11:15 AM we are hosting our annual Volunteer Appreciation Tea for over 30 volunteers who have RSVPed to join us to celebrate their support for learners and learning at CWS during the 2023-2024 school year. Members of our Division 1 choir and grade 6 student musicians will be sharing performances for our guests at the tea. Please see below for an opportunity for ALL families to come into the school to watch our singers and musicians rehearse before school begins tomorrow:

8:25 AM - Division 1 choir members and Grade 6 musicians enter via the Grade ½ doors on the compound. These students will proceed directly to the gym to set up for their rehearsal.

8:40 AM - All interested and available family members are invited to enter via the front doors of the school to watch our rehearsal of musical pieces in the gym (will last approximately 15 minutes)

11:15 AM - Volunteer tea begins

Safety on the Compound Before School

It’s fantastic to see so many students travelling to school actively on scooters, bikes and roller blades! Please help us keep all students safe by reminding your child of the following:

  • Wear a helmet at all times
  • No riding bikes/scooters on the compound (or any school property) before school, after school, or during school hours (if your child arrives early, they should leave their bikes/scooters/roller blades at their entry door until the bell rings
  • Scooters/bikes need to be walked to the racks once inside the building with care for and attention to other students around them on foot
  • If you are locking up bikes outside, please ensure you have a strong D-shaped lock to prevent theft
  • If your dog is walking with you for school drop offs/pick ups please do not bring them onto school grounds per signage outside

Dress for the Weather and Eating Outside

As temperatures heat up outside, students will continue to spend time outdoors each day for learning and play. We will also continue to eat lunch outside in a shady location when the weather permits. Please remember to send your child with a hat, sunscreen and water bottle on sunny days, and with appropriate rain gear if wet weather is in the forecast. During outdoor lunches we ask students to sit for 15 minutes (12:15- 12:30 PM) before being dismissed to play. This is an opportunity to practice eating mindfully (including remaining seated while eating), cleaning up after themselves, and engaging in quite conversations with nearby friends and classmates. Outdoor lunches enable us to offer a full 30 minutes of uninterrupted play time for al students over our entire outdoor area, a wonderful way to move and reset for an afternoon of learning at 1PM.
