Dear Friends and Families of Colonel Walker School,

Thank you to all who made it out to enjoy our “Something From Nothing” winter celebration of learning last week. It was fantastic to see all our students dance with such enthusiasm and heart. We are so grateful for the support of our CWS Council and Association, and for the grant we received from the Alberta Foundation for the Arts that made this unique learning experience possible. If you were unable to bring a donation for the Calgary Food Bank last Thursday and would like/are able to contribute, boxes are set up in our entrance for collection of non-perishable food items until Tuesday December17. Thanks to Mr. K and Ms. Tammy for leading this initiative!

Community Singing

Next week on Tuesday (December 17), Wednesday (December 18) and Thursday (December 19) we will sing together as a school community in the gymnasium each morning. All families are invited to join us after drop-off (standing room only) between 8:40- 9:00am if it works for your schedule. Our choir (grades 3-6) will perform two songs they have learned for us on both Wednesday and Thursday mornings. This is just one of the many ways we are working together to build and celebrate community this school year.

Lunchroom Update

Our CBE lunchroom supervisor visited at the end of November to review our program and give feedback in alignment with best practices. There is much to celebrate as we work together to support healthy eating habits and safety for all our students each day in the lunchroom.

As a school community, we will continue to focus on implementing the following measures:

  • 10 minutes of “Mindful Eating” at the beginning of each 20 minute lunch block. Mindful eating involves listening to our bodies for hunger cues, remaining seated while eating, chewing and swallowing carefully, eating only what has been packed for us, talking quietly with neighbors, and tasting/enjoying our food. These are habits we’d love you to practice and reinforce at home!
  • Students will be asked to take home uneaten items each day rather than throwing them away. This will not only minimize unnecessary movement during the busy lunch block but will also enable families to see clearly what their students are/are not eating each day so that adjustments to what is packed can be made and waste minimized.

Thank you for your support as we work to ensure safe and healthy eating habits for all students who enjoy eating together in our lunchroom each day.

Lost and Found

All items in our lost and found will be donated at the end of this week. If you think your child has lost an item at school, please stop by before the end of the week to see if it has been found.
