School Update

Dear Friends and Families of Colonel Walker School,

Last week, we had the privilege of walking and learning alongside Elder Shirley Hill, our Elder in Residence this year. Elder Shirley spent time with each of our classes outside on the land, sharing learning and helping students to notice, think and wonder on the land in our own schoolyard. Students in our grades ½ learning community reported that during the time they were with Elder Shirley, they learned “to feel peace outside," that it is important to “give back to Mother Earth," and that “all people are important." What powerful and inspiring lessons for us all!

Please see below for some important reminders:

Bike Locks

We had a bike stolen off our bike racks last week during the school day- the thief cut the lock and walked away unseen. This is an important reminder to all families that a strong D-shaped lock is necessary if your children are biking to school. We do not have room inside the building to store bikes, and adequate locks will prevent the upset that ensues when unexpected thefts occur.

Terry Fox Run

Terry Fox had big dreams, and his legacy makes a difference for all Canadian families affected by cancer. This year, our school is proudly taking part in the annual Terry Fox School Run to continue Terry's dream of a world without cancer. Please support our school's fundraising efforts today! You can support this run by talking to your child about who they might dedicate their run to, sending them to school with a “Toonie" to give their teacher for the Terry Fox Foundation, or by visiting Colonel Walker School's donation page to make an online donation.

Meet the Teacher Conferences

A reminder to make sure you have signed up for a time on Thursday September 21 or Friday September 22 to meet your student's teacher. This meeting is an opportunity to see your child's classroom and share information you think the teacher needs to know about supporting your child's learning this year. Because it is so early in the year, conversations about “progress in learning" will be limited at this time.

School Council Meeting

Please join us for our Annual General Meeting on Tuesday September 26 at 6pm at the school. A Teams link will be shared for those who are unable to make it in person due to childcare or other constraints. We look forward to sharing about the great learning taking place at Colonel Walker School. Please come out to find out how you can get involved, share feedback, and contribute to enhanced learning opportunities for all students at school.

Please do not hesitate to reach out with questions or concerns at any time.

Warm regards,

Kate Jones
